When one thinks about Fashion, the lingering question remains, “What is Fashion?”
Once Coco Chanel had said, “There is nothing more comfortable than a caterpillar and nothing more made for love than a butterfly. We need dresses that crawl and dresses that fly. Fashion is at once a caterpillar and a butterfly, caterpillar by day, butterfly by night.” What I think she had meant by this statement was that it is important for one to look good but it is also integral for one to feel comfortable in his or her skin. No one, (not even Coco Chanel) can pull off a look as beautiful as a butterfly without being comfortable in it as well as his or her skin.
Fashion is a fusion of inspiration, style and individuality. The greatest of fashion designers know the importance of individuality. Style should generate from within you and you should present it in the physical form via the media of fashion. One should strive for individuality and not lose their identity. In fashion, one should strive to be the herder and not the sheep. The late Alexander McQueen, one of the greatest designers of our time had once said “I kind of like it the way it is right now, ... I believe in that one-on-one sell. I don't really believe in flooding the market with loads of goods that don't mean much, and (you) lose your identity.”
